Hong Kong's Tai Po Fire Constituency Records Lowest Election Turnout Amid Public Outcry

The 2025 Legislative Council election in Hong Kong has brought to light stark differences in voter engagement across the city. Notably, the New Territories North East constituency, scarred by the tragic Wang Fuk Court blaze, has emerged with the lowest estimated turnout rate citywide, reflecting a community grappling with both tragedy and political disaffection.

Low Turnout Reflects Deep-Seated Frustration

Hours before polls closed, estimates indicated that the constituency, encompassing the area devastated by one of Hong Kong's deadliest fires, registered a turnout of just 29.72 per cent as of 10:30 pm. This figure stands as the lowest among all 10 directly elected geographical constituencies, falling 1.71 percentage points below the citywide average. While marginally higher than its 2021 counterpart by 0.83 percentage points at the same time, the overall low participation underscores significant local sentiment.

DAB Faces Voter Anger Over Renovation Bid

A primary driver of voter anger in the New Territories North East is the widespread resentment directed at the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB). This backlash follows revelations that one of its district councillors had reportedly advised the owners' corporation of the fire-ravaged Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po regarding its renovation project. Many residents view this involvement critically, particularly given the devastating impact of the fire and ongoing calls for accountability and genuine support for displaced individuals.

Incumbents Battle Against Newcomers

Despite the prevailing anger, some voters expressed a desire to give incumbent politicians a chance to demonstrate their commitment to the community. The electoral battle is intense, with prominent figures such as DAB chairman Gary Chan Hak-kan and the New People's Party's Dominic Lee Tsz-king fighting to retain their seats. Both are challenged by three newcomers, making the race in this pivotal constituency highly competitive and unpredictable.

The New Territories North East constituency, covering the Tai Po district and parts of Sha Tin, saw 132,359 constituents cast their ballots. The unique confluence of a devastating local tragedy and political controversy has undoubtedly shaped voter behavior, making this election a crucial barometer of public mood and political trust in Hong Kong.
