Indonesian Couple Canned 140 Times for Sharia Law Violations

A couple in Indonesia’s Aceh province were publicly caned 140 times each for having sex outside marriage and consuming alcohol. The harsh punishment underscores the strict enforcement of Sharia law in the region. The man and woman received 100 lashes for sexual relations outside marriage and 40 for drinking alcohol, amounting to a total of 140 strikes each.

The woman fainted during her caning and was promptly taken to an ambulance. Muhammad Rizal, head of Banda Aceh’s Sharia police, emphasized that no exceptions are made, even within their own ranks, reinforcing the Islamic code’s stringent nature. This incident highlights the ongoing strict enforcement of Sharia law in Aceh, a province with special autonomy since 2001.

According to reports, two men were previously publicly flogged 76 times each for similar offenses, underscoring the region’s commitment to punitive measures against violations of Islamic laws. The case has drawn significant attention due to its severity and the broader implications for the enforcement of Sharia in a predominantly Muslim-majority country like Indonesia.
