ISIL Claims Responsibility for Niger Airport Attack

The ISIL (ISIS) armed group has claimed responsibility for an attack on Niger's Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey. The attack caused significant damage and led to the deaths of at least 20 attackers and four soldiers.

Niger's military government, which came to power after a 2023 coup, accused France, Benin, and Ivory Coast of sponsoring the attack. However, Russia-backed forces defending the base confirmed their role in combating the assailants.

The airport, located near the presidential palace, is a strategic military base hosting uranium stockpiles and serves as a key hub for regional security efforts against armed groups like ISIL's affiliate and al-Qaeda-linked groups.
