Tensions remain high as Iran and US hold talks in Oman amidst fears of war, with both sides showing conflicting positions on key issues.

Iran-US Tensions High Amid Talk in Oman

The latest talks between Iran and the United States in Oman have been described as 'positive' by Iranian officials, but no clear roadmap has emerged to ease fears of a potential US attack. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi led the delegation in Muscat, while Washington sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, with Brad Cooper joining as the US Central Command chief.

Oman's Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi facilitated separate meetings between the two sides, stating that the talks aimed to 'identify areas for possible progress'. Consultations focused on resuming diplomatic and technical negotiations, but Araghchi emphasized the atmosphere of mistrust following recent US actions, including military deployments near Iranian waters.

The discussions took place amid a tense week in which the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group was positioned nearby, along with US fighter jets and warships. Iran reportedly shot down one of their drones, further escalating regional tensions.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran if it does not reach a new agreement on key issues, including uranium enrichment and missile capabilities. The US demands include halting enrichment at the 3.67% rate set by the 2015 nuclear deal, which was unilaterally withdrawn by Trump in 2018.

Iran has maintained that it will only negotiate to lift sanctions and de-escalate, rejecting any discussions on missile issues or other non-nuclear topics. The country's military readiness for a regional war remains high, with recent displays of advanced ballistic missiles.

Public sentiment in Iran is mixed, with some hoping for reduced tensions while others fear the talks will lead to conflict. The ongoing protests and state responses have also heightened economic pressures on the population.
