DHAKA: Violent anti-government protests have returned to the streets of Dhaka, this time targeting the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus. Hundreds of government employees took to the streets demanding the implementation of the Ninth National Pay Scale and raised slogans against Yunus, including 'there is no rice in the stomach, development is only in words' and 'injustice will be washed away with blood'. The protests have also seen demands for an impartial UN-led probe into the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a co-founder of Inqilab Moncho who was shot dead in Dhaka on December 18. Clashes broke out outside Yunus's official residence 'Jamuna' after security personnel used lathi-charges and tear gas to disperse the protesters. The protests, which came ahead of upcoming elections, have caused embarrassment for the Yunus administration, which has appealed to citizens to demonstrate responsibility and cooperation for a peaceful election.
