Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemns anti-Olympics protesters in Milan for causing violence and disrupting train infrastructure during the 2026 Winter
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly condemned anti-Olympics protesters in Milan for their involvement in violent incidents during the ongoing 2026 Winter Olympics hosted by Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
The protests, which began peacefully, turned tense when some demonstrators set off smoke bombs and firecrackers near Olympic venues. This led to a harsh response from Milan police, who used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds, resulting in clashes near the Olympic Village and a nearby highway.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also issued a statement, emphasizing that violence has no place at the Games. The Italian Transport Ministry is investigating suspected terrorism after railway sabotage near Bologna, which disrupted train operations.
Meloni praised the thousands of Italians working to ensure the smooth operation of the Olympics, many of whom are volunteers. She labeled those causing chaos as 'enemies of Italy and Italians.'
Separately, there were protests against Israel’s participation in the games and against US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is providing security for the US delegation.
