Greek Diplomat Condemns Gaza Crisis as a 'Nightmare'

Greece's Foreign Minister, Giorgos Gerapetritis, has painted a concerning picture of the current global landscape, describing it as the most turbulent period since World War II. In an interview, he addressed critical issues ranging from the conflict in Gaza to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the challenges facing the European Union.

Global Democracy at a Crossroads

Gerapetritis emphasized a crisis in democracy fueled by increasing inequalities between nations and individuals. He argued that this has led to an era dominated by populism and demagoguery, undermining the rule of law. The minister highlighted the impact of technology and globalization, noting that challenges like pandemics, climate change, and migration affect everyone.

Europe's Identity Crisis

The Greek Foreign Minister pointed to the European Union's unanimous decision-making process as both an obstacle and a reflection of national interests. He suggested that Europe is currently experiencing a "political identity crisis," with member states sometimes losing sight of their shared values and succumbing to internal divisions, particularly in the aftermath of the war in Ukraine. Europe needs to rediscover its resilience and core identity.

Greece's Stance on Ukraine

Greece stands firmly behind Ukraine, supporting its sovereignty and territorial integrity. While acknowledging that EU and US sanctions against Russia have had a limited impact due to circumvention, Gerapetritis stressed the importance of upholding international law.

Seeking Peace in the Middle East

Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Gerapetritis reiterated Greece's support for a two-state solution and offered his country's services as an "honest broker." He condemned Hamas's actions while also expressing grave concern over the escalating death toll in Gaza, calling for a swift ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid. "It's not a matter of who mediates, it's a matter of stopping the nightmare," he said.

Trade and US Tariffs

While acknowledging growing US-Greek ties and investments, Gerapetritis addressed the issue of US tariffs, stating that they haven't had a major impact on Greece due to limited bilateral trade exposure. However, he affirmed Greece's support for free trade and expressed hope for a compromise on tariffs.
