Trump Administration Deportation to South Sudan Violated Court Order

A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration violated a court order by attempting to deport migrants to South Sudan.

Judge's Ruling

Judge Brian E. Murphy stated that the Department of Homeland Security's actions were "unquestionably violative" of an injunction he had previously issued.

Details of the Deportation

The ruling came after the administration apparently deported eight people to South Sudan, even though most of them were not from that country. The individuals being deported were originally from Cuba, Laos, Mexico, Myanmar, Vietnam and South Sudan, but their home countries refused to accept them. Homeland security officials claimed that they had been convicted of serious crimes.

Injunction Details

Judge Murphy's injunction required that migrants being deported to a third country receive due process and an opportunity to raise safety concerns.
