BBC obtains footage revealing the moment of the Titan submersible's implosion during its dive to the Titanic. Concerns about the sub's design are highlighted.
The BBC has released shocking footage capturing the moment of the Titan submersible's implosion during its June 2023 expedition to the Titanic wreckage.
The footage, obtained as part of the US Coast Guard's (USCG) investigation, reveals that Wendy Rush, wife of Oceangate CEO Stockton Rush, heard a loud bang on the support ship and questioned its source. This bang is now believed to be the sound of the implosion.
The documentary, Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster, sheds light on pre-existing concerns about the submersible's carbon fiber hull, which began showing signs of failure a year before the fatal dive. The USCG suggests that delamination during a prior dive served as a critical warning sign.
Prior to the disaster, deep-sea exploration experts had raised serious concerns about the Titan's design, with some describing it as an 'abomination'.
The implosion resulted in the tragic loss of all five passengers, including Oceangate CEO Stockton Rush, British explorer Hamish Harding, veteran French diver Paul Henri Nargeolet, and British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman.
The US Coast Guard is expected to release its final report later this year, aiming to determine the causes of the disaster and prevent future occurrences.
