Apple CEO Challenges Texas' Child Safety Bill
Apple CEO Tim Cook has reportedly engaged with Texas Governor Greg Abbott regarding a newly approved bill mandating age verification for device owners in the state.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Cook requested changes or a veto of the bill, expressing concerns over potential privacy implications.
Concerns Over User Privacy
Apple argues that implementing the Texas bill could threaten user privacy, as it requires linking minors' App Store accounts to their parents for download approval.
According to an Apple spokesperson, this would necessitate collecting sensitive personal information from all Texas residents, even for simple apps.
Support for Parental Control
Proponents of the bill assert that it provides parents with greater control over their children's smartphone usage.
Wider Legislative Trend
At least nine other states are considering similar legislation. Apple previously blocked a similar bill in Louisiana, which is now being revisited.
