Trump Offers Canada 'Golden Dome' Missile Defense for Free if it Becomes 51st US State

Donald Trump offers Canada free access to the 'Golden Dome' missile defense system if it becomes the 51st US state, or a $61B participation fee.

Trump's Offer: 'Golden Dome' for Canada, with a Condition

Former US President Donald Trump has proposed a controversial deal to Canada: join the "Golden Dome" missile defense system for free, provided it becomes the 51st US state. Otherwise, participation would cost $61 billion.

The 'Golden Dome' Initiative

The "Golden Dome" is a ambitious $175 billion plan to establish an advanced air and missile defense shield across North America by 2029. The system relies heavily on Canada, particularly its Arctic territory, for setting up essential radar and tracking stations. These stations are crucial for detecting potential missile threats from countries like Russia and China.

Canada's Response and Strategic Importance

Canada has not yet issued an official response to the offer. However, earlier this year, then-Defence Minister Bill Blair indicated Canada's interest in joining the missile defense system, deeming it “sensible” and in the country’s “national interest.” Prime Minister Mark Carney also acknowledged that Canada had engaged in “high-level” discussions regarding the proposal.

Despite Trump's apparent downplaying of Canada's role, experts emphasize its significance. Retired US Air Force General Glen VanHerck stated that “what Canada really brings is terrain,” enhancing North American early warning capabilities.

Strained Relations and Uncertain Future

Trump's statehood remarks and aggressive approach risk straining US-Canada relations. Prime Minister Mark Carney has firmly rejected the suggestion that Canada should become the 51st US state. The future of the "Golden Dome" system remains uncertain without Canada's full cooperation.
