Iran Names Temporary Leaders After Supreme Leader's Assasination

The interim leadership council in Iran has been formed to manage the country's affairs following the tragic assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei by US and Israeli forces. This council consists of three prominent figures:

  • President Masoud Pezeshkian, a reformist politician elected in 2024, will lead the council along with
  • Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, a member of the Guardian Council since 2019, who also serves as the deputy chairman of the Assembly of Experts.
  • Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, the chief justice of Iran's Supreme Court, will oversee judicial and legal affairs during this period.

The council's primary role is to manage state functions until a new supreme leader is elected. Iran has pledged to retaliate against those responsible for Khamenei's killing, targeting US and Israeli assets across Gulf nations in retaliatory strikes.

Iran's Constitution, Article 111, authorises this temporary leadership council to assume the duties of the Supreme Leader until a successor is chosen. The members are trusted religious and political figures who will ensure stability and continuity during this challenging time.
