Defense attorneys for the suspect in the Palisades Fire claim new evidence shows his lack of responsibility, challenging the prosecution's case and highlighting
Defense attorneys for Jonathan Rinderknecht, the man accused of sparking the deadly Palisades Fire in Los Angeles, are calling for his release. They argue that new evidence shows he is not responsible for the blaze.
The fire, which started on January 1, 2025, killed 12 people and became one of California's most destructive wildfires. Prosecutors initially charged Rinderknecht with starting the fire, but his attorneys claim he is being framed for the Los Angeles Fire Department's failure to extinguish earlier hot spots.
They point to a recently released deposition where a firefighter testified about unattended hot spots on January 2. This evidence was not available during Rinderknecht's indictment, leading his attorneys to argue for his immediate release.
Attorney Steve Haney stated, 'This is not a case about an individual causing a fire. This is a case about government agencies failing to do their jobs.'
Haney emphasized that Rinderknecht should never have been indicted and should be released immediately. The case has sparked debates about accountability and the handling of wildfire incidents.
The defense is also pushing for an independent investigation into the initial fire's management.
