US Spares Iran Energy Infrastructure Amid War with Israel

The US has decided not to target Iran's energy infrastructure during its war with Israel, aiming to minimize impact on global oil markets.

US Spares Iran Energy Infrastructure

The United States has announced that it will not target Iran's energy infrastructure during its ongoing conflict with Israel, aiming to minimize the impact on global oil markets. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized that the impact of the strikes on Iran's oil and gas industry will be temporary, lasting only a few weeks at most.

Israel recently carried out strikes on oil storage facilities in and around Tehran, leading to fires and significant damage. Secretary Wright stated that the US is not planning to attack Iran's oil industry, natural gas industry, or any part of its energy sector.

The war has severely impacted the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world's crude oil and liquefied natural gas passes. This has caused concern among global energy markets, with West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices rising sharply.

The US is working with shipping companies to ensure safe passage through the strait, with some tankers likely to receive direct protection from the US military. Iran accounts for about four percent of global oil production, and its oil industry has been affected by international sanctions, although some exports continue, primarily to China.

The US government is considering lifting sanctions on Russian oil exports as global oil prices surge. The US International Development Finance Corporation is also implementing a reinsurance mechanism to cover risks associated with travel through the Strait of Hormuz. This development aims to stabilize the global energy market and reduce disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict.
