Massive Storms Hit US Midwest and South

Massive storms, including snow and high winds, battered parts of the US over the weekend, causing significant disruptions. The Upper Midwest experienced heavy snowfall, creating challenging travel conditions, while the mid-South prepared for late-day thunderstorms. AccuWeather meteorologist Tyler Roys emphasized the potential impact on major airports due to wind and snow.

Over 20 inches of snow fell in southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin, while Hawaii faced severe flooding. In Nebraska, National Guard members were deployed to tackle wildfires, and Gov. Jim Pillen urged residents to follow evacuation orders. The weather service warned of high winds and severe storms crossing much of the Eastern US by late Monday, with areas from South Carolina to Maryland at highest risk for damaging winds and tornadoes.

More than 210,000 utility customers across six Great Lakes states were without power, and over 600 flights were canceled at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. In Maui, residents dealt with extreme flooding, with homes and farmland submerged, and power outages affecting thousands. The National Guard and fire departments conducted multiple flood rescues. Schools in Raleigh and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, closed due to the severe weather, and officials advised enabling emergency alerts on phones for updated information.
