Russian Hackers Target US Officials on Signal

Russian cyber actors have compromised thousands of accounts on the encrypted messaging app Signal, targeting high-value individuals such as current and former U.S. government officials, military personnel, political figures, and journalists. FBI Director Kash Patel issued a warning about this widespread campaign, highlighting the potential for serious security breaches and phishing attacks.

The attack involves Russian intelligence-linked actors gaining unauthorized access to user accounts, which can lead to identity theft and other malicious activities. Top officials from the Trump administration were also among those affected, underscoring the risks associated with using commercial messaging platforms like Signal without robust security measures.

In addition to targeting Signal users, the attackers have been known to mimic commercial support messages to deceive targets into performing actions that could compromise their accounts further. The National Security Agency previously advised against using Signal due to these vulnerabilities.
