Peace Talks Between Ukraine and US Conclude

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian President, has expressed optimism about potential prisoner exchanges as peace talks between Ukraine and the US continue. The discussions, held in Florida over two days, aim to find ways to end the four-year conflict with Russia, though Russian representatives were not present at the negotiations originally planned for Abu Dhabi.

Zelenskyy emphasized that while the US appears focused on regional issues like Iran, it's crucial to address the ongoing war in Ukraine. He hinted at future exchanges of prisoners, which would be a positive sign of diplomatic progress.

Additionally, Zelenskyy has called for continued sanctions against Russia, particularly targeting their shadow fleet of tankers used to bypass sanctions and fund the war effort. Washington recently lifted some sanctions on Russian oil to alleviate supply shortages caused by the conflict in Iran, though European countries have not followed suit.

The US peace plan includes demands for a presidential election in Ukraine, alongside territorial concessions. Despite his term having expired, Zelenskyy faces pressure from former allies like Donald Trump to hold elections and secure a ceasefire to prepare for democratic polls. Meanwhile, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine's former top general and now Ambassador to Britain, disputes the need for a pause in fighting to conduct elections, advocating instead for a 'peace won through war' that ensures a secure future for his country's children.
