Korea Faces LNG Price Volatility Amid Qatar Supply Disruptions

A plastic manufacturing facility in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, has closed due to supply issues linked to the Mideast crisis. officials in Seoul have noted that Korea may experience increased volatility in liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices following Qatar's declaration of force majeure on its long-term LNG supply contracts with Korea. However, the impact on supply appears limited as Yang Ghi-wuk, deputy minister for trade, industry and resource security, stated that Korea has sufficient LNG supplies to last through this year, even excluding shipments from Qatar.

The government is actively seeking alternative routes to secure gas supplies, despite not yet receiving official confirmation from Qatar. Despite these measures, the potential rise in LNG price volatility could affect domestic electricity rates. The climate ministry has announced plans to reduce LNG consumption by increasing coal and nuclear power generation.

Additionally, the Seoul government has temporarily designated naphtha as an economic security item due to supply shortages and is preparing to impose export restrictions within this week.
