Netherlands to Pay Millions After Romanian Treasure Theft
The Dutch government is preparing to allocate 5.7 million euros to cover losses from the audacious theft of ancient Romanian gold artifacts from the Drents Museum in the Netherlands.
This allocation is part of a state scheme designed to encourage museums to host valuable exhibitions by guaranteeing partial coverage in case of theft or damage.
The Heist and Aftermath
In January, thieves broke into the museum, making off with the 2,500-year-old Helmet of Cotofenesti and three gold bracelets, considered national treasures by Romania. The incident sparked significant outrage and media attention.
The payout covers the insurance guarantee provided by the state. Authorities are still hoping to recover the stolen items. Two suspects have appeared in court.
A reward of 100,000 euros has been offered for information leading to the recovery of the gold artifacts.
