Kansas Hit by Severe Flooding: Rescues in Progress
Torrential rains have caused significant flash flooding in the Wichita area of Kansas, leading to numerous rescue operations.
Emergency Response
Emergency rescue teams are working to assist stranded motorists, including those trapped in vehicles nearly submerged by floodwaters. Julie Stimson, Sedgwick County's emergency management director, reported rainfall totals ranging from 1.5 to 7 inches since Monday.
State of Emergency
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has issued a disaster emergency declaration, enabling state agencies to provide necessary assistance to affected areas. The Wichita fire department has been actively using boats to rescue individuals from flooded vehicles.
Impact on El Dorado
Approximately 30 miles east of Wichita, in El Dorado, the Walnut River overflowed, resulting in flooding of streets and residences. One resident described swimming to escape her flooded home.
Kansas City Storms
Severe storms also impacted Kansas City, with strong winds causing damage such as overturned trucks and downed trees. A tornado warning was issued, though no serious damage was reported. Travel was also disrupted, with the Indiana Pacers' flight to Oklahoma City delayed due to the storms.
Future Forecast
While Wednesday is expected to bring dry weather, forecasts indicate more rain is on the way for Thursday, raising concerns about further flooding given the already saturated ground conditions.
