Harvey Weinstein Convicted of Sexual Assault in New York Retrial

Harvey Weinstein has been convicted of sexual assault in New York following a retrial. This verdict comes after his previous sex crimes conviction in the state was overturned.

The jury, comprised of seven women and five men, reached a unanimous decision after deliberating for five days on the six-week trial. Weinstein was found guilty on one of three counts, and jurors are still deliberating on a rape charge.

Key Testimonies

The case centered on the testimonies of Miriam Haley, Jessica Mann, and Kaja Sokola, who accused Weinstein of exploiting his influence in the entertainment industry to sexually abuse them. The jury found Weinstein guilty of assaulting Haley but not guilty of assaulting Sokola.

Weinstein's spokesperson expressed concerns about the jury deliberations, suggesting some jurors had preconceived notions. The retrial focused on allegations from Mann and Haley, also including new accusations from Sokola. Sokola expressed relief that Weinstein would be held accountable.

The women testified about alleged sexual abuse during private meetings, which Weinstein's defense argued were consensual. In total, over 100 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct, contributing to the #MeToo movement.

Before the allegations, Weinstein co-founded Miramax, a powerful film studio.
