Trump Declines to Sign G7 Statement on Iran
President Donald Trump has refused to sign a joint statement drafted by G7 leaders concerning de-escalation between Israel and Iran. A senior White House official indicated that the president believes there is no current justification for signing the statement, given his prior public statements on the matter.
G7 Division
Trump's reluctance highlights divisions within the G7. However, the White House official emphasized that Trump's participation in the summit was a demonstration of unity.
US Stance on Iran
“Under the strong leadership of President Trump, the United States is back to leading the effort to restore peace around the world. President Trump will continue to work towards ensuring Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon,” the official stated.
European Efforts
The draft statement, spearheaded by European officials including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, emphasizes Israel's right to self-defense and the necessity of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. These leaders had hoped to reach a consensus during the G7 summit, hosted by Canada.
Trump's Perspective
Prior to the G7 summit, Trump stated that Iran is seeking negotiations because it is “not winning” against Israel. He urged immediate talks to prevent further escalation, saying, "They have to make a deal, and it's painful for both parties, but I'd say Iran is not winning this war, and they should talk, and they should talk immediately, before it's too late."
Tehran's Request
Tehran has reportedly asked Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman to encourage President Trump to use his influence on Israel to agree to an immediate ceasefire with Iran, according to reports.
