Chad: Ex-PM Succes Masra Arrested Over Deadly Clashes
Former Chadian Prime Minister, Succes Masra, was arrested on Friday on allegations of inciting hatred linked to recent deadly clashes.
Details of the Arrest
Public prosecutor Oumar Mahamat Kedelaye stated that Masra is being investigated on serious charges, including:
- Incitement of hatred and revolt
- Complicity in murder
- Desecration of graves
Alleged Involvement in Logone Occidental Clashes
The prosecutor revealed that investigations point to Masra's involvement in a clash that resulted in the deaths of 42 people in the southwest province of Logone Occidental. The victims were primarily women and children.
"This alleged involvement incited the population against a community residing in the same locality. Messages were circulated, notably on social networks, calling on the population to arm themselves against other citizens," the prosecutor explained.
Masra's Party Responds
Masra's opposition Transformers party issued a statement condemning his arrest as a "kidnapping" and a blatant violation of his civil and political rights.
Background: Political Crisis in Chad
In 2022, Masra went into exile after the military government suspended his party amid unrest over President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno's decision to extend his rule. More than 60 people died during the unrest.
Following his return, Masra was appointed prime minister in January 2024. He faced off against Deby in the presidential election last year, alleging electoral fraud after Deby won.
