Ten inmates, some charged with murder, escaped from a New Orleans jail. Authorities suspect inside help. One inmate is recaptured, nine remain at large.
Ten prisoners, some facing murder charges, escaped from the Orleans Parish Jail in New Orleans. The incident occurred overnight, and authorities suspect the inmates received assistance from within the facility.
The inmates are believed to have escaped around midnight, with their absence discovered during a headcount at 8:30 AM local time. Sheriff Susan Huston stated, "There's no way for anyone to get out of this facility without help."
One inmate, Kendall Myles, was apprehended in New Orleans' French Quarter after being identified using facial recognition technology. The other nine escapees are considered "armed and dangerous", and a manhunt is underway. Myles is being rebooked with a charge of Simple Escape.
The inmates reportedly dislodged a sliding door from its tracks and then broke through a wall, removing a toilet and metal bars. They then climbed down a wall and ran across a highway.
The FBI and US Marshals are assisting local police in the search. Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick described the escape as an "urgent and serious situation".
