Mahmoud Khalil vows to continue protesting Israel and the Gaza war after his release from detention, supported by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, recently released after over three months in detention, was greeted by supporters, including US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, upon his arrival at Newark International Airport.
Khalil, a former Columbia University graduate student, expressed his determination to continue protesting against Israel and the war in Gaza, criticizing US government funding and university investments. "The US government is funding this genocide, and Columbia University is investing in this genocide," he stated. "This is why I will continue to protest with every one of you."
Ocasio-Cortez condemned his detention as a violation of the First Amendment and "an affront to every American." She added, "The Trump administration knows that they are waging a losing legal battle. They are violating the law, and they know that they are violating the law."
Khalil, detained for 104 days, vowed to advocate for immigrants in detention centers. "Whether you are a citizen, an immigrant, anyone in this land, you're not illegal. That doesn't make you less of a human," he said.
Although not accused of any crimes during the protests, the Trump administration sought his expulsion for allegedly antisemitic views. A judge ordered his release, deeming continued detention unlikely. The government is appealing the release.
