Tesla Faces 'Deceptive Practices' Order in France Over Autonomous Driving Claims

French investigators order Tesla to halt 'deceptive business practices' related to autonomous driving claims, sales contracts, and refunds. Fines loom.

Tesla Ordered to Cease 'Deceptive Practices' in France

French investigators have mandated that Tesla halt what they've termed 'deceptive business practices,' specifically concerning the automaker's claims regarding fully autonomous driving capabilities. This order carries the threat of significant financial penalties if Tesla fails to comply.

Investigation Findings

The investigation, conducted by the finance ministry's Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control office, revealed several infractions. These include:

  • Deceptive commercial practices related to autonomous driving claims.
  • Sales contracts lacking essential details such as date, time, and location of vehicle delivery.
  • Failure to provide timely refunds to customers.

Compliance and Penalties

Tesla has been given a four-month window to rectify these issues and comply with regulations. Failure to do so will result in fines of 50,000 euros per day until compliance is achieved.

European Market Challenges

This order arrives at a time when Tesla is facing challenges in the European market. Sales of its electric vehicles have been declining, a trend partially attributed to CEO Elon Musk's political involvements and statements. A lawsuit has also been filed by French Tesla owners who claim the vehicles have become linked to far-right ideologies.
