French investigators have mandated that Tesla halt what they've termed 'deceptive business practices,' specifically concerning the automaker's claims regarding fully autonomous driving capabilities. This order carries the threat of significant financial penalties if Tesla fails to comply.
The investigation, conducted by the finance ministry's Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control office, revealed several infractions. These include:
Tesla has been given a four-month window to rectify these issues and comply with regulations. Failure to do so will result in fines of 50,000 euros per day until compliance is achieved.
This order arrives at a time when Tesla is facing challenges in the European market. Sales of its electric vehicles have been declining, a trend partially attributed to CEO Elon Musk's political involvements and statements. A lawsuit has also been filed by French Tesla owners who claim the vehicles have become linked to far-right ideologies.
