Kentucky Grapples with Catastrophic Damage

According to the Associated Press, Kentucky bore the brunt of the disaster, with 18 confirmed deaths and 10 individuals hospitalized in critical condition. Seventeen deaths were reported in Laurel County, and one in Pulaski County. Maj. Roger Leslie Leatherman, a 39-year fire department veteran, died while responding to emergency calls.

Governor Declares State of Emergency

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency, describing the event as one of the worst disasters during his tenure and called for national support. Residents in London, Kentucky, recounted horrifying scenes of flattened homes.

Missouri and Virginia Also Affected

In Missouri, St. Louis was struck by a confirmed EF-3 tornado, resulting in five deaths and 38 injuries. Additional deaths were reported in Scott County, Missouri, and Virginia.

Widespread Power Outages and Staffing Shortages

The storms caused widespread power outages, affecting over 462,000 customers. Staffing shortages within the National Weather Service exacerbated the crisis. Forecasters are warning of more severe weather in Texas, Oklahoma, and the Plains.
