20 Dead in Sinaloa, Mexico; Cartel Feud Suspected
Authorities in Mexico are investigating the deaths of 20 people found near a highway bridge outside Culiacán, Sinaloa. The victims had gunshot wounds, and a cartel feud is suspected.
Details of the Incident
At least five, potentially six, of the victims were decapitated. Investigators discovered a message believed to be from one of the warring Sinaloa cartel factions at the scene. The contents of the note remain undisclosed.
Cartel Warfare
The violence stems from the power struggle between La Mayiza, aligned with Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, and Los Chapitos, led by the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. The situation worsened after the arrests of Zambada and one of Guzmán's sons in the U.S. in 2024, leading to increased distrust between the rival groups.
Impact on the Region
Since the conflict intensified, nearly 3,000 people have been reported either dead or missing. While army units have been deployed, residents report the continued presence of rival groups patrolling openly.
