Thailand's PM Shinawatra suspended after a leaked call with Cambodia's Hun Sen sparked controversy over a border dispute and alleged betrayal accusations.
Thailand's Constitutional Court has suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra following the leak of a phone call with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen.
The court accepted an ethics petition against her, leading to her suspension by a 7-2 vote. Public discontent arose after a recent border clash with Cambodia that resulted in a Cambodian soldier's death.
The leaked phone call revealed discussions about the border dispute and included critical remarks about a Thai military official. She was also heard referring to Hun Sen as “uncle,” assuring him that if there is anything he wants she will “take care of it”. This further fueled public anger and protests, with protesters accusing her of betraying the country.
The controversy coincides with a cabinet reshuffle approved by Thailand’s king, intended to stabilize the government after a major party's departure. Shinawatra also assumed the role of culture minister, aiming to promote Thai culture globally, a cause she championed before becoming prime minister.
