Pope Leo XIV will meet Zelensky after his inauguration Mass, where he voiced concerns about the Ukraine war and urged peace negotiations.
Following his inauguration Mass, Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Vatican confirmed the meeting after the Mass, where the Pope highlighted his concerns regarding the war in Ukraine.
During his prayer at the end of the service, Pope Leo XIV emphasized that "the martyred Ukraine is waiting for negotiations for a just and lasting peace to finally happen". His words resonated with the thousands gathered in St Peter's Square.
The inauguration Mass saw a large attendance, including dignitaries such as US Vice President JD Vance. The Pope addressed the crowd, warning against the marginalization of the poor and the dangers of autocracy. He criticized "hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth's resources and marginalises the poorest".
The Pope's official inauguration included the placement of the pallium garment and the Ring of the Fisherman, symbolizing his papacy and connection to St Peter.
Many attendees expressed feelings of hope and inspiration, with one professor noting that the Pope's initial message of "Let the peace be with you" and urging people not to be afraid reflects what the world and the church needs.
