Indian Gay Man Faces Deportation from Canada, Cites Homophobic Threats

Visual artist Tarun Godara is facing deportation to India after losing his final appeal to stay in Canada. He has resided in Canada for eight years.

Fears for Safety in India

Godara reports receiving homophobic messages and threats, including messages saying he will be "turned straight" upon his return to India. He expressed these concerns to the Toronto Star.

Background

The 33-year-old artist came to Canada in 2017 seeking relief from a closeted life in India. He claims to have been sexually assaulted in 2013. His work permit renewal was denied, and the court ruled that mockery did not amount to persecution, making him eligible for deportation as his legal status expired.

Work Permit Issues

Godara's application to extend his permit was initially considered under a new program but was ultimately rejected due to older regulations and the subsequent expiration of the special program. The court also stated that he couldn't prove his sexual assault was a result of his sexual orientation.

Both of Godara's parents work for the government in India.
