A large explosion at a Rome petrol station injured at least 45 people, including first responders. The blast occurred after a fuel leak and fire.
A significant explosion occurred at a petrol station in the eastern Prenestino district of Rome on Friday morning. At least 45 people sustained injuries, including emergency responders.
The explosion, which took place shortly after 8 AM, impacted a wide area and was heard across Rome. Emergency services had been called to the scene prior to the blast.
Italian news agencies reported that the injured are receiving treatment in local hospitals. Two individuals are in critical condition with extensive burns.
According to Rome's mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, the explosion is suspected to have been caused by a gas leak during fuel-tank refilling operations, following a truck striking a pipeline at the petrol station. This led to a fire and then a powerful explosion.
