Australian authorities have strongly condemned what they are calling an arson attack on a synagogue in Melbourne. Worshippers were inside the building at the time of the incident.
The fire occurred at the entrance of the synagogue, located in eastern Melbourne, Victoria. Police reported that the fire was started on Friday night. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze quickly.
Fortunately, no one was injured among the 20 people who were inside the synagogue.
Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan called the attack "absolutely appalling." She stated that any attack on a place of worship, especially a Jewish synagogue, is an act of anti-Semitism.
Police believe a male suspect poured flammable liquid on the front door and set it alight. The suspect is described as white and in his 30s. The investigation is ongoing.
Alex Ryvchin, co-CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, noted that the fire was set as people were gathering for Shabbat dinner.
Authorities are also investigating whether this attack is linked to a separate incident at an Israeli restaurant in the inner city, which was extensively damaged.
