A 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on Sunday. The epicenter was within Nepal, and there have been no reports of damage or casualties.
A magnitude 3.5 earthquake rattled Nepal on Sunday morning, July 6, 2025, according to the National Center of Seismology (NCS). The tremor struck at 8:21 AM IST, originating from a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was precisely located at 27.70°N latitude and 87.76°E longitude, within Nepal.
Thankfully, initial reports indicate no immediate casualties or significant structural damage. This seismic event follows a magnitude 4.2 earthquake that occurred in Nepal just a week prior, on June 29, as reported by the NCS.
Experts note that shallow earthquakes, like the one experienced, can pose a greater threat due to the energy release occurring closer to the Earth's surface. This can lead to more intense ground shaking and potentially increased risk of damage.
Nepal's vulnerability to earthquakes is attributed to its location on the convergent boundary between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The ongoing subduction of the Indian plate beneath the Eurasian plate generates immense pressure, resulting in frequent seismic activity. This tectonic process is also responsible for the formation and uplift of the majestic Himalayan mountain range.
Nepal's history is marked by numerous earthquakes, including the devastating earthquake of 2015.
