A fast-moving wildfire near Kelowna International Airport in British Columbia caused tactical evacuations and the grounding of flights on Sunday.

Fire Details and Response

The blaze ignited in the Ellison area, spreading quickly due to dry conditions. The BC Wildfire Service deployed air tankers, helicopters, and ground crews. Firefighters from Kelowna, Lake Country, and other departments joined the effort.

Fire information officer Cali Nessman reported that the fire, named Whelan Creek, is estimated to be 4.31 hectares in size and is currently being held.

Evacuations and Airport Impact

The Kelowna RCMP conducted door-to-door evacuations in areas including Rockface Road, Upper Booth Road, and Dead Pine Road. The Kelowna International Airport suspended operations, leading to the cancellation or delay of over 25 flights.

Residents are advised to avoid the affected areas and follow emergency instructions. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
