Search underway at Lake Taal, Philippines, for missing cockfighters allegedly murdered by rogue police. Fifteen officers are under investigation.
Search teams have arrived at Lake Taal, south of Manila, Philippines, to search for dozens of cockfighters believed to have been murdered by rogue police officers.
Fifteen police officers are currently under investigation concerning disappearances linked to the country's large cockfighting industry in 2022. The case was recently reignited by a televised witness claiming knowledge of submerged bodies in the lake.
Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla stated he has multiple witnesses to pinpoint the missing persons' locations. The current mission focuses on identifying the search area, assessing initial water conditions, and measuring the depth. The Philippine Coast Guard is assisting police in the preliminary assessment.
National Police Chief Nicolas Torre emphasized the need for swift action due to the approaching typhoon season. Remulla has requested technical assistance from Japan, particularly for mapping the lake bed, reaching depths of 172 meters. Torre believes the Philippines has the necessary equipment for the search.
Filipinos wager millions weekly on cockfights. While former President Rodrigo Duterte banned livestreaming, enforcement has been lax.
