France Launches Criminal Investigation into X Over Foreign Interference

French authorities have initiated a criminal investigation into X, formerly known as Twitter, concerning allegations of foreign interference and unlawful data handling. The probe aims to determine if the platform manipulated its content and illegally gathered user data.

Key Concerns and Allegations

The Paris Prosecutor is leading the investigation, focusing on potential violations of French law by X and its senior officials. The inquiry stems from complaints filed in January, alleging the use of X's algorithm for purposes of foreign interference.

Complaints and Concerns Raised

Eric Bothorel, a member of the French parliament, expressed concerns about recent changes to the X algorithm and apparent interference in its management since Elon Musk's acquisition. He highlighted a lack of clarity in the criteria leading to algorithm changes and moderation decisions.

Another complaint, filed by a cybersecurity director, pointed to a major modification in the X platform's algorithm, potentially skewing democratic debate in France by promoting hateful content.

European Commission's Scrutiny

In addition to the French investigation, the European Commission is examining X for potential breaches of the Digital Services Act, including concerns about its algorithms following a live-streamed interview with a far-right German politician.

X's Response

X's director in France, Laurent Buanec, stated that the algorithm is designed to avoid offering hateful content and that the platform has strict rules to protect against hateful discourse.
