Surrey's mayor urges social media platforms to ban violent content after a shooting in British Columbia. She calls for immediate action to protect the community
Following a recent shooting in Surrey, British Columbia, Mayor Brenda Locke has issued a strong statement urging social media platforms to take action against the spread of violent content.
Mayor Locke is specifically calling on major platforms such as Meta, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok to ban accounts linked to criminal organizations and swiftly remove any content that promotes or glorifies violent crime. She is also advocating for the implementation of real-time detection tools to prevent the spread of such material.
The appeal comes after a brazen shooting at a local business. The incident was recorded and uploaded to social media by the perpetrator, who claimed responsibility for the attack. This act has instilled fear within the Surrey community.
Mayor Locke visited Kap’s Cafe, the site of the incident, and expressed her commitment to working with the Surrey Police Service, RCMP, and federal authorities. She emphasized the importance of collective effort from residents, law enforcement, and technology companies to ensure the safety and resilience of Surrey.
"We will not let criminals dictate how we live or work. I am confident that, together, we will keep Surrey safe, resilient, and unafraid," Locke stated.
