Congo Massacre: ADF Rebels Kill 66 in Ituri Province

A horrific attack in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has resulted in the deaths of at least 66 civilians. The assault was carried out by fighters from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamist group with links to Islamic State (IS).

Details of the Attack

The ADF targeted civilians in the Irumu area of Ituri province, which is located near the border with Uganda. Jean Tobie Okala, a spokesperson for the United Nations mission in Ituri, described the attack as a “bloodbath.”

“Around 30 civilians were killed between Thursday and Friday, July 11, in the Walese Vonkutu chiefdom, Irumu territory, in Ituri,” Okala stated.

Suspected Retaliation

Officials suspect that the attack was a retaliatory measure for a recent bombing campaign conducted by joint Congolese and Ugandan forces. The ADF's presence and activities have been increasing in the region, causing widespread concern.

Widespread Condemnation

Rights groups and the United Nations have strongly condemned the ADF's actions, accusing them of numerous killings and abductions, including a significant number of children. The ADF's reach has expanded towards Goma and Ituri province, escalating the crisis.
