Elmo's X account was hacked, posting offensive messages. Sesame Workshop confirmed the breach, working to restore control after the antisemitic posts.
The official X (formerly Twitter) account of Elmo, the popular Sesame Street character, was compromised on Sunday, leading to a series of offensive and antisemitic messages.
The account, boasting over 640K followers, was used to post hateful messages, including calls for violence against Jewish people. Some posts bizarrely linked President Donald Trump to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In a statement to Fox News, a Sesame Workshop spokesperson confirmed the hack, denouncing the "disgusting messages, including antisemitic and racist posts." They are actively working to regain full control of the account.
The incident drew widespread condemnation and mockery online. Some users expressed shock and dismay at the adult language appearing on a children's character's account. Representative Jared Moskowitz commented on the defunding of PBS.
Sesame Street has faced increased scrutiny recently, with some Republican lawmakers pushing to cut federal funding for PBS, especially after the show celebrated LGBTQ "Pride" Month.
