Chinese Nationals Charged with Illegally Exporting Nvidia AI Chips to China
Two Chinese nationals residing in California face charges for allegedly exporting millions of dollars' worth of advanced Nvidia AI chips to China. The Department of Justice (DOJ) alleges that Chuan Geng and Shiwei Yang illegally shipped Nvidia H100 general processing units and other technologies from October 2022 through July 2025 without proper licenses.
Illicit Shipments and Export Controls
These chips, subject to U.S. export controls since 2022, are crucial for artificial intelligence applications. The DOJ investigation revealed that Geng and Yang's company, ALX Solutions, attempted to evade export laws by shipping the controlled chips to China via Malaysia and Singapore.
Investigation and Evidence
Evidence included incriminating communications found on seized phones and a pattern of payments from Hong Kong and China-based companies instead of the purported recipients.
Nvidia's Response
Nvidia has stated that it sells primarily to well-known partners and that diverted products will not receive service, support, or updates.
