Elias Rodriguez faces hate crime charges for the murder of two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington. The attack may result in the death penalty.
Elias Rodriguez, 31, has been indicted on federal hate crime charges in connection with the fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy employees in Washington, D.C. The US Attorney announced the indictment, emphasizing the gravity of the alleged crime.
The indictment alleges that Rodriguez was motivated by the victims' Israeli nationality. The nine-count indictment accuses him of committing a hate crime resulting in death, motivated by the “actual and perceived national origin of any person.”
Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, 26, were killed outside the Capital Jewish Museum on May 21. Rodriguez already faces first-degree murder charges.
The indictment includes findings that could lead to the death penalty. He also faces charges for causing a death through the use of a firearm and for discharging a firearm during a violent crime.
Rodriguez reportedly told police he committed the act "for Palestine" and "for Gaza." He was taken into custody at the scene.
The incident was initially investigated as both a hate crime and a potential act of terrorism.
