Mexican authorities have announced a significant breakthrough in the high-profile assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, with the arrest of an alleged mastermind. The murder of the popular opposition figure, a vocal critic of the government's security strategies, sent shockwaves across the nation and ignited widespread protests.

Mayor Manzo, who led the municipality of Uruapan within the key avocado-producing state of Michoacan, was tragically gunned down on November 1 while attending a public Day of the Dead celebration alongside his family. Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch identified the detained individual as Jorge Armando 'N', adhering to the Mexican custom of withholding full surnames. Investigations have reportedly connected Jorge Armando 'N' to a criminal organization operating within Michoacan, an entity known to serve the formidable Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Garcia Harfuch underscored the gravity of this development during a press conference, stating, "This arrest represents a key step in dismantling the criminal structure responsible for this heinous attack." He further elaborated that an in-depth analysis of cell phone data recovered from previously apprehended suspects proved crucial, enabling the identification of a messaging group where the assassination plot was orchestrated.

Government Response and Continued Investigation

In the aftermath of Manzo's murder, President Claudia Sheinbaum initiated a comprehensive security deployment, dispatching over 10,500 security force members to Michoacan. This strategic initiative aims to aggressively combat extortion and systematically dismantle criminal gangs plaguing the region.
