A significant legal development has unfolded in Thailand, with an arrest warrant issued for Anne Jakapong Jakrajutatip, the high-profile co-owner of the Miss Universe beauty pageant. The warrant stems from serious fraud allegations totaling US$930,000 (S$1.2 million).
The South Bangkok Civil Court issued the warrant on November 25, following a complaint filed by a plastic surgeon. The surgeon accused Ms. Jakapong of fraud and deliberately withholding crucial information when enticing him to invest in her company, JKN Global Group, in 2023. According to court documents shared with AFP, the defendant allegedly "invited (the plaintiff) to invest knowing her inability to return the money within the appointed time."
A verdict in the 30 million baht (S$1.2 million) case was initially scheduled for November 25. However, Ms. Jakapong's non-appearance in court led directly to the issuance of the arrest warrant. The court stated that her behaviour "could be interpreted as fleeing." The verdict has since been postponed to December 26, though some local media outlets have reported that Jakapong may have already departed for Mexico, fueling rumors surrounding her company's escalating financial difficulties.
The legal challenges facing Ms. Jakapong coincide with a period of significant financial instability for JKN Global Group. The company, which notably acquired the Miss Universe Organization for US$20 million in 2022 and later sold half its stake to Mexican firm Legacy Holding Group USA for US$16 million, experienced a major setback in 2024. Its shares were delisted from the Stock Exchange of Thailand after the company failed to submit required financial statements and was subsequently found to have falsified them.
The Miss Universe Organization has issued a statement clarifying that "these legal proceedings are entirely separate" from its operational activities. It's important to note that this legal battle follows a dramatic conclusion to the 2025 Miss Universe contest itself, which wrapped up in Bangkok on November 21.
That event was marred by its own controversy, including a public bust-up between a male competition host and the eventually victorious Miss Mexico, Ms. Fatima Bosch. During a livestreamed event, the host singled out Ms. Bosch for allegedly failing to post promotional content and reportedly called her "dumb," prompting Ms. Bosch to lead a walk-out. The host later apologized after a tearful news conference, but his behaviour drew the attention of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who publicly praised her compatriot for speaking out. This pageant-related drama, however, remains distinct from Ms. Jakapong's personal legal issues.
As Anne Jakapong Jakrajutatip faces an arrest warrant and the possibility of being considered a flight risk, the situation casts a significant shadow over her business empire and raises critical questions about accountability in high-stakes investments, further complicated by the recent public controversies surrounding the Miss Universe brand itself.
