Trump Announces Pardon for Ex-Honduran President Hernandez Amidst Drug Trafficking Conviction

Donald Trump has announced his intention to grant a full pardon to former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who is currently serving a 45-year sentence in the United States following his conviction on drug trafficking and firearms charges. This declaration, made via Truth Social on a Friday, comes even as the Republican leader often positions himself as a staunch opponent of drug-related issues.

Political Endorsements and Warnings

Simultaneously, Trump reaffirmed his support for Honduran presidential hopeful Nasry Asfura of the conservative National Party. He cautioned that if Asfura does not secure victory, the United States would cease to provide significant financial aid to Honduras. The National Party, under Hernandez's leadership from 2014 to 2022, maintained a strong alliance with Washington. Hernandez himself was apprehended shortly after concluding his presidential term.

Hernandez's Conviction and Trump's Rationale

In March 2024, a New York jury found Hernandez guilty of illicitly accepting millions of dollars in bribes. These payments were made in exchange for protecting cocaine shipments destined for the U.S., belonging to traffickers he had publicly vowed to combat. Hernandez was sentenced in June of the preceding year and has consistently maintained his innocence, labeling his conviction as wrongful.

Trump elaborated on his decision, stating, “I will be granting a Full and Complete Pardon to Former President Juan Orlando Hernandez who has been, according to many people that I greatly respect, treated very harshly and unfairly.” This statement underscores a perceived injustice in Hernandez's conviction from Trump's perspective.

Honduras Braces for Pivotal Election

Adding another layer of complexity, Honduras is on the cusp of a pivotal election this Sunday, with the outcome highly uncertain. Polls indicate a tight race between Asfura, the former mayor of Tegucigalpa, and Rixi Moncada, a former defense minister representing the ruling leftist LIBRE Party. Television personality Salvador Nasralla of the centrist Liberal Party also remains a strong contender.

Current Political Landscape and International Concerns

Honduras has been governed by President Xiomara Castro since 2021. Castro has cultivated close diplomatic ties with Cuba and Venezuela, nations grappling with severe economic and human rights challenges, and which the Trump administration has repeatedly criticized as dictatorships. The candidate who secures a simple majority on Sunday will lead Honduras from 2026 to 2030. Concerns about the electoral process have been voiced by both the Organization of American States and Washington, who are closely monitoring the election's progression, amid fears that multiple candidates might prematurely declare victory.
