Intensified Israeli Operations Grip West Bank, Gaza Amid Mounting Humanitarian Crisis

Palestinian communities across the occupied West Bank are enduring widespread lockdowns and an intensified military offensive by Israeli forces, a human rights group has revealed. This severe escalation in operations comes as the Israeli military continues its deadly raids throughout the territory, impacting daily life and raising alarms among aid organizations.

Children and Families at Risk

Save the Children issued a stark warning on Friday, highlighting that families in the northern West Bank are confined to their homes, living under constant fear of violence stemming from the heightened Israeli military activity initiated earlier this week. The child rights organization emphasized that these lockdowns are "keeping children out of school, jeopardizing family incomes, and increasing the risk of physical violence and child detention from the Israeli military."

West Bank Communities Under Siege

Since Wednesday, Israeli troops have laid siege to significant areas of the northeastern Tubas governorate, conducting numerous large-scale raids in other West Bank cities and towns, including Jenin. Reports from the Palestinian news agency Wafa indicate that dozens have been injured in the Tubas area, and over 160 individuals have been detained since the operations began.

While Israel claims these operations are aimed at dismantling Palestinian armed groups, local residents dispute this narrative, asserting that the military has engaged in indiscriminate attacks against civilians, obstructed journalists and emergency services, and damaged vital infrastructure. Adding to the controversy, footage from Jenin on Thursday showed Israeli forces killing two unarmed Palestinian men as they attempted to surrender, an incident that has sparked widespread condemnation.

Broader Context of Violence and Displacement

This surge in Israeli military and settler violence in the occupied West Bank occurs against the backdrop of Israel's ongoing war in the nearby Gaza Strip, which has claimed nearly 70,000 lives since October 2023. According to the United Nations, more than 1,000 Palestinians in the West Bank have been killed by Israeli army and settler attacks since the Gaza conflict began. The northern West Bank, in particular, has been severely affected, with approximately 32,000 residents from several refugee camps forcibly displaced from their homes since January, and subsequently blocked from returning by Israel. Rights groups and UN officials have described the extensive home demolitions by the Israeli military as a deliberate campaign to forcibly displace Palestinians.

Ameer, an individual working with a Save the Children partner organization in the West Bank, characterized this week's raids in the Tubas governorate as a "systematic assault by Israeli forces and a continuation of the Israeli government’s collective punishment policy." He stressed the severe implications for children, stating, "The operation is cutting off children from the key services and supplies they rely on and need, including education and health services. Every child in these areas is being denied the right to an education."

Gaza: Truce Violations and Aid Blockades Persist

Simultaneously, Israel has continued its assaults on Gaza, despite a US-brokered truce with Hamas that commenced last month. Friday saw several Israeli attacks reported near Khan Younis and Rafah in southern Gaza, alongside a drone strike that killed a Palestinian in Bani Suheila, a town east of Khan Younis, as per local medical reports. The Ministry of Health in Gaza reports that at least 347 Palestinians have died in the enclave since the truce began on October 10.

Ismail al-Thawabta, director of Gaza’s Government Media Office, stated on Friday that 535 Israeli violations have been documented since the ceasefire took effect. He further highlighted via Telegram that aid flow into the war-ravaged territory remains significantly below agreed levels. "The [Israeli] occupation has allowed only 9,930 trucks to enter Gaza out of the nearly 28,000 requested – a mere 35 percent – thus turning aid into a tool of war used for pressure rather than a legal or humanitarian obligation," al-Thawabta declared. He concluded by emphasizing that "The humanitarian situation in Gaza is deteriorating at an unprecedented rate, and the Israeli aggression has destroyed infrastructure and essential services."
