Russian Oil Terminal Halted by Sea Drones Amid Escalating Conflict and Peace Efforts

Operations at one of Russia's largest oil terminals, located near Novorossiysk, were brought to a standstill on November 29 following a reported sea drone attack. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), which owns the facility and includes major US oil companies like Chevron and ExxonMobil, described the incident as a "terrorist attack." The strike significantly damaged Single Mooring Point 2 (SMP-2), rendering it inoperable.

This disruption occurred just hours before Ukrainian negotiators were scheduled to head to the United States for critical talks aimed at ending the ongoing conflict. While Ukraine has not officially commented on the Novorossiysk incident, it has consistently sought to retaliate against Russian aggression as the war enters its fourth year.

Kyiv Targeted by Deadly Russian Strikes

The attack on the Russian terminal coincided with a fresh barrage of deadly drone and missile strikes launched by Moscow against Ukraine. Ukrainian officials reported that these attacks killed three people and caused widespread damage to buildings across Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes, stating on X that energy infrastructure and civilian facilities were primary targets, resulting in extensive damage, fires in residential areas, dozens injured, and three fatalities.

Residents of Kyiv recounted harrowing experiences. Ms. Galyna Bondarenko, a media worker, described debris flying into her home, while Natalia Shkoda witnessed her and her husband's cars engulfed in flames after a loud explosion. The energy ministry confirmed that over 600,000 consumers nationwide, including 500,000 in Kyiv, were left without power. Russia maintains it targets energy infrastructure linked to Ukraine's military-industrial complex, denying civilian targeting, while Ukraine views these as cynical attempts to demoralize its populace.

Ukrainian Drones Target Black Sea Oil Tankers

Further escalating maritime tensions, a Ukrainian SBU security service source claimed responsibility for attacks on two oil tankers, the Virat and the Kairos, in the Black Sea. These vessels were reportedly covertly transporting sanctioned Russian oil. The Turkish transport ministry confirmed explosions rocked the ships off Turkey's coast on November 28, with one hit again early the following day. The Ukrainian source stated that "modernised Sea Baby naval drones successfully targeted the vessels," providing video evidence.

Ukraine's Internal Pressures Amid Peace Efforts

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Zelensky's government faces internal challenges and external pressures. Russia has made advances on the front line for over a year, and Zelensky's administration recently dealt with a high-profile corruption probe that led to the sacking of his chief of staff on November 28. The US-backed peace plan, which Kyiv's team is now reviewing, arrives at a complex juncture for Ukraine.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, the conflict has been Europe's largest and deadliest since World War II. Kyiv and its allies denounce it as an unprovoked and illegal land grab, responsible for immense violence, destruction, and the displacement of millions of Ukrainians.
