This sweeping measure comes just days after a fatal shooting near the White House, which resulted in the death of a National Guard member and left another critically injured.

Secretary Rubio Confirms Visa Suspension

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed on Friday that his department had paused “visa issuance for ALL individuals traveling on Afghan passports.” The move signals a heightened focus on national security and immigration vetting following the incident that shocked the nation's capital.

Details Emerge on Suspect and Incident

Investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the Wednesday shooting. The suspect, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, now faces serious charges including first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed. Lakanwal reportedly worked with the CIA during the Afghanistan War and had been granted asylum under the current Trump administration this year, after initially applying during the Biden administration.

The victims of the tragic event were Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, who succumbed to her injuries, and Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, who remains hospitalized in critical condition. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro's office indicated that additional charges against Lakanwal are anticipated.

Intensified Immigration Scrutiny Promised

Seizing on the recent security breach, the Trump administration has pledged to intensify its efforts to regulate legal immigration. This includes promises to halt entry from certain impoverished nations and to conduct comprehensive reviews of Afghan and other legal migrants already residing in the United States. These new initiatives are in addition to existing immigration control measures.

Joseph Edlow, Director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), articulated the rationale behind the asylum pause in a post on the social platform X. He stated that decisions would be suspended “until we can ensure that every alien is vetted and screened to the maximum degree possible.” While immigration experts acknowledge the US employs rigorous vetting systems for asylum-seekers, the processing of asylum claims made from within the country through USCIS has long been plagued by significant backlogs.
