Tai Po Fire Aftermath: Residents Get Brief Access to Spared Tower
The community of Tai Po, Hong Kong, is grappling with the aftermath of a devastating fire that ravaged Wang Fuk Court, claiming seven residential towers. Amidst the destruction, residents of Wang Chi House, the sole building to escape the inferno, have been granted limited, one-off access to retrieve their cherished possessions.
Limited Access for Displaced Residents
Authorities have scheduled 90-minute windows for residents on Wednesday and Thursday. During these crucial periods, civil servants will be present to offer assistance, helping residents safely move their valuables and personal items from their homes. This arrangement acknowledges the significant anxiety felt by those displaced and eager to recover what they can.
Amy Lam Man-han, the regional commander for New Territories North, confirmed these arrangements at a press briefing on Tuesday. She underscored the authorities' understanding of the residents' urgent need to return, even temporarily.
Ongoing Search and Recovery Efforts
Meanwhile, the arduous task of search and recovery continues in the other affected buildings. As of Tuesday afternoon, the Disaster Victim Identification Unit (DVIU) had thoroughly searched 40 percent of Wang Cheong House and 90 percent of Wang Sun Court. Investigations in the remaining five fire-damaged blocks were concluded on Monday. The coordinated efforts highlight the ongoing commitment to addressing the immediate humanitarian needs and the wider investigation into the tragic incident.
