Israeli forensic tests confirm remains handed over by Hamas are not those of the last two Gaza hostages, Ran Gvili and Sudthisak Rinthalak, abducted Oct 7, 2023
Jerusalem, Dec 3 – Israeli forensic services have concluded that remains transferred by Hamas on Tuesday were not those of the last two deceased hostages held in Gaza. This definitive statement comes from the office of Israel's prime minister, providing a critical update on the fate of the remaining captives.
Under the terms of an October ceasefire deal, Hamas had handed over what the Red Cross described as the remains of one of the last two deceased hostages still in Gaza. However, Israeli forces, after receiving these "findings," immediately sent them for rigorous forensic testing.
A statement released on Wednesday from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed, "The findings brought yesterday for examination from the Gaza Strip are not linked to any of the deceased hostages." The identification process was carried out with precision at the National Center for Forensic Medicine, ensuring an accurate and conclusive determination.
The two remaining deceased hostages have been identified as Israeli police officer Ran Gvili and Thai national Sudthisak Rinthalak. Both individuals were tragically abducted during Hamas's devastating October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. This brutal assault triggered a protracted two-year conflict in the Gaza Strip, leading to widespread devastation and humanitarian challenges.
Throughout the conflict, the Geneva-based Red Cross has served as a vital intermediary. Their crucial role has involved facilitating communication and negotiations between various militant groups in Gaza and Israel. The organization has been instrumental in paving the way for the release of living hostages and coordinating the sensitive handover of remains, navigating the complex and often perilous landscape of the ongoing hostilities.
